FAQ
What Is A Fest?
Fest is a challenge in which participants provide prompt (ideas) for creators to, well, create. A fest may be fandom, pairing or character specific. It may have a particular theme, such as a holiday, a movie or a trope, or it may be a combination of many.In the past, fests were held for writers only, where the final product were fanfics, but now, fest mods allow different ways to include other types of fanworks, such as fanarts. However, for this season of Caitvi Fest, we have decided to take the traditional route.(If you are an artist and wish to participate in the fest with something other than fanfics, feel free to contact us through email or social media dms!)How Do Fests Work?
Fests are a collection of works and it’s usually divided in a few steps, known as interest check, prompting, claiming, and last, but not least, fanwork reveals. It’s also common for fests to have check-ins, extensions and drop-outs.Interest Check: A period where fest moderators check the interest that people have in their activities/themes. Can be held by social media polls or sometimes Google Forms. It varies from fest to fest. Not all fests do this step.Prompting: The period where people send prompts (ideas) based on the fest theme. Usually the prompting period lasts a few weeks, and the prompts are gathered on the fest AO3 collection.Claiming: The period where creators claim the prompt(s) they are interested in. Usually writers need to have an AO3 account to claim prompts for fanfics, while other types of creators use Google Forms or other platforms provided by the fest mods. After claiming, claimants start on their work. Participants usually have months to work on their fanworks, but can change according to individual fest schedules.Fanwork Reveals: The period where the final works are revealed, sometimes without revealing the creators, so everyone can have an equal chance of having attention for their creations. When this happens, fests hold a separate Creator Reveals after. Usually this period is divided in batches, and the number of reveals or batches may vary depending on the schedule and number of final works submitted.Check-in: The period where fest mods contact creators to check on their progress and their interest in the fest. Check-ins are made differently by each fest/mod, so please make sure to read the fest guidelines to know how the check-in is going to happen. Some check-ins require a minimum word count for fics, and the number of check-ins and the dates held are defined by the fest mods. It’s not an obligatory step to all fests.Extensions: It’s an extra period that the fests give to creators who were not able to finish their works by the due date. Every mod/fest has their own guidelines for extensions, so please always contact the fest mods to know more about it.Drop-out: It’s when you... drop-out. It’s very common for fests to have drop-outs, which is when people give up on creating for the prompt they claimed before. It can happen for whatever reason, and each fest deals with drop-outs differently. What Is A Self-Prompt?
It’s an option for anyone who does not wish to claim a prompt from the collection, and instead want to use their own ideas to write their own fic.Do I need an AO3 account in order to participate in a fest?
Usually for fic writers, you need to have an AO3 account to claim and submit your final work. To prompt directly on AO3, you need to have an AO3 account as well, but some fests also provide other platforms to prompt, like Google Forms or Twitter dms.All the Fest Guidelines/Rules are the same?
No, each fest has their own guidelines and rules, and it depends on the theme of the fest. Can I share the prompt I’m creating for?
Since this is not an anonymous fest: yes. Sharing #WIPWednesdays on social media is also encouraged. (Don’t forget to tag us!)
